Marianne Carlson of Jefferson continues to claim ribbons and prizes in State Fair foods competitions.
In the Chocolate Storybook Candies competition judged Aug. 12 she snagged reserve sweepstakes honors. She placed first in basic fudge (no marshmallow crème) and first in fudge with nuts. She also placed first in Chocolate Works- toffee.
Entries were judged on flavor, texture and general appearance.
Also on Friday, Carlson placed second in the Ruth Shoop’s Favorite Apple Dumplings contest. Entries were judged on taste, texture and appearance.
Saturday competitions were also successful for Carlson. She earned second place overall and a $150 gift card in the King Arthur Flour bread competition. She and the first and third place overall winners tied for the sweepstakes award.
Carlson placed first in the caraway rye category, first in the oatmeal bread category, and first in the white bread category.
Entries were judged on flavor, appearance and texture.
She also won first place and $100 in cash in the Frances Miller’s Famous White Bread contest on Saturday. Contestants were required to use the provided white bread recipe. Entries were judged on appearance, taste, texture and resemblance to Frances Miller’s white bread.
Carlson returned to the State Fair Sunday, Aug. 14, and won first place overall and $100 cash in the Sunday Dinner at Mom’s competition. Participants in the contest not only cooked a main dish, side dish or dessert, but also provided judges with a written story about why the dish was special.
She returned to a candy contest Sunday and claimed third place overall and $25 cash in the Piper’s Homemade Candies competition. Her entry was again fudge. Entries were judged on flavor, texture and general appearance.
